East Asia Music Boycotts RTHK Event

30 November 2008

The press conference for the 31st RTHK Top Ten Gold Songs Awards <十大中文金曲> was held on Friday, but in a continued boycott of RTHK events by East Asia Music, their artistes, including Denise Ho (何韻詩), Ivana Wong (王菀之) and newly signed Bosco Wong (黃宗澤) were noticeably absent.

Singers that were present to launch this year's event included Eason Chan (陳奕迅), Miriam Yeung (楊千嬅), Joey Yung (容祖兒), Hacken Lee (李克勤), Leo Ku (古巨基), Hins Cheung (張敬軒) and FAMA (農夫). Raymond Lam (林峯) was also on hand to offer his support to TVB colleagues Myolie Wu (胡杏兒) and Linda Chung (鍾嘉欣) who are up for the newcomers awards this year.

Asked if she knew why Denise was absent from this event, Miriam replied that she did not know. She added that she did not think it was due to the lack of awards last year, but refused to say any more because she was there in her capacity as a "Hong Kong singer". Asked if she will be attending the RTHK awards ceremony this year, Miriam replied that she will probably be busy filming over that period, otherwise she would definitely attend, regardless of whether or not she wins an award.

Joey also claimed not to know why Denise was absent and said she would call her good friend later to ask. Asked about reports that she had secretly attended Denise's recent concert and was seated with Denise's parents, Joey said that all of the guests were sitting near Denise's parents and she was not being secretive about her attendance. Asked if her confidence was heightened by the absence of East Asia artistes, she smiled that as usual she was super-confident this year.

Leo was also unclear about the mass absence from this event and when asked if there will be a similar situation arising at the Metro Radio events with the boycott from Gold Label artistes, he replied that he will follow any instructions from the company. Asked if he was worried that this would affect his chances of taking the overall media awards, Leo said that he will leave this to destiny.

As part of the event, the singers voted for who they would like to see in a music industry "dream band". Hacken was voted in as the band leader and he smiled that this was either an indication that he was very popular or that he is well respected for his seniority and age. Asked how he felt about this year's achievements, Hacken said tha he has not released an album this year and has just released two new songs, so it was hard for him to judge.

The event producer Fung Wai Tong (馮偉棠) was asked to respond to the East Asia boycott and he replied that the company had turned down their invitation on the premise that their artistes were all busy with other engagements. He emphasised that the awards are meant to be a symbol of encouragement and that RTHK will still present deserving winners with awards, even if they do not attend the ceremonies.
