The Detective Box Office Takes $1 Million On First Day
29 September 2007
Aaron Kwok (郭富城), Elle Choi (小雪) and director Oxide Pang (彭順) attended an event to celebrate China National Day and to promote their new film The Detective <C+偵探> today at the World Trade Centre, Hong Kong.
The Detective went on general release in Asia on 25 September to co-incide with the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday. At the event, the production company announced that the box office takings on the first night had broken HK$1 million and this was very encouraging for the cast and crew.
Kwok is currently busy rehearsing for his forthcoming concert, but said that he will go out to celebrate the film's success and the hard work shown by everyone. Talking of his shower scene in the film, Kwok explains that his character hates being dirty, so after falling into a smelly river, he had to scrub himself down immediately.
Kwok was also asked about recent rumours alleging him to be involved in illegal road racing. He responded very angrily, saying that this is not true and said that he has consulted with his lawyers to start libel proceedings. He said: "I want every Chinese person in the world to know that Aaron Kwok is innocent because this incident will seriously affect my image. I have not had one penalty point in five years and I drive within the law." He added that the police have not been in contact with him because this is all absurd.
In the film, Kwok's protagonist is a private eye called Tam, who set up his small agency in Bangkok's Chinatown after he failed to become a police officer due to severe short-sightedness. When his usual run of missing dog and chicken cases is stepped up a gear, Tam suddenly finds himself in the midst of a mysterious series of murders.
Although the film appears outwardly to be "just another detective story", the artistry of director Pang, who is better known for his work in the horror genre, has built in twists of added suspense and a little terror into the case-within-a-case storyline.
The Detective also stars Liu Kai Chi (廖啟智), Shing Fui On (成奎安) and Kenny Wong (黄德斌).
