HK Olympic Torch Bearers Announced

29 April 2008

The Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong (港協暨奧委會) announced the names of the 120 people who will be the torch bearers today, for when the Olympic flame arrives on Friday.

Included in the list are ordinary members of the public, athletes, officials, businessmen and celebrities. The recognisable names in the rundown includes Andy Lau (劉德華), Jacky Cheung (張學友), Liza Wang (汪明荃), Kelly Chen (陳慧琳), Leo Ku (古巨基), Eason Chan (陳奕迅), Alex Fong (方力申), Stephen Chan (陳志雲), Pansy Ho (何超瓊), Timothy Fok (霍震霆) and Victor Li (李澤鉅).

Some of the torch bearers were present at the press conference, where further details of the relay and other events were revealed. Andy will be leading the Hong Kong leg of the tour and Jacky will be on the final leg of the run.

Andy is currently in Beijing supporting other promotional activities for the games and when he heard the news that he would be a Hong Kong torch bearer, he was overjoyed and expressed his honour at being selected to take part in such a historical event. Jacky was also pleased to represent Hong Kong and he was confident that he will be able to complete his 200 m leg in good time.

Kelly, Leo and Alex will also be taking part in the early part of the relay, running from the Cultural Centre to Austin Road.

Kelly expressed her excitement about the event, but was worried about looking odd by having her t-shirt tucked into her shorts. Asked if she was concerned about disruption from protesters, Kelly said that she was not worried because she believed in the security measures. She revealed that she will have about 90 seconds to run from the Cultural Centre to Kowloon Mosque.

Leo will be running the section in Tsimshatsui East and he said that the organisers have explained the requirements to him, so he is happy with the arrangements. He also admitted that he will be treating his souvenir torch like a family heirloom.

Having carried the torch for previous games, Alex was pleased to have been selected once again. He said that he would like to do the run along the harbourside at either Tsimshatsui or Victoria, because the photographs will be very picturesque.
