TVB Fundraising Show Raises $180 million
18 May 2008
Singers, artistes and celebrities gathered at TVB City yesterday evening to take part in a telethon fundraising show to boost donations to the Sichuan Earthquake aid appeal.
The three hour show was eventually extended to four hours as the stars made appeals to the audience and gave musical and artistic performances, encouraging viewers and sponsors to give generously and help the victims of the devastating quake, measuring 7.8 on the Richter Scale, that struck China's Sichuan province on 12 May.
TVB Executive Chairman Sir Run Run Shaw (邵逸夫) made his first public appearance following a recent bout of illness that led to several weeks in hospital. Looking in good spirits and better health, Sir Run Run was accompanied by his wife, Mona Fong (方逸華) and TVB General Manager Stephen Chan (陳志雲) as he spent around 20 minutes shaking hands with his staff and guests. Mona revealed that Sir Run Run has been very concerned about the victims of the disaster and added that after making a full recovery from a bout of influenza and a chest infection, Sir Run Run is now fine and making regular visits to the office.
The Sir Run Run Shaw Charity Fund made a donation of HK$100 million towards the fund and this was presented on Sir Run Run's behalf by Mona. Property tycoon Mr Joseph Lau (劉鑾雄) also boosted a fund with a donation of HK$10 million.
The event was opened by a moment's reflection led by Hong Kong SAR Acting Chief Executive Mr Henry Tang (唐英年) and the performance of the fundraising theme song "Promise" <承諾> by all the guests and performers. Entertainment acts were then provided by the artistes present, including Liza Wang (汪明荃), Andy Lau (劉德華), Jacky Cheung (張學友), Alan Tam (譚詠麟), Aaron Kwok (郭富城), Hacken Lee (李克勤), Joey Yung (容祖兒), Miriam Yeung (楊千嬅), Gigi Leung (梁詠琪), Adam Cheng (鄭少秋), Shirley Kwan (關淑怡) and Richie Ren (任賢齊). The show was hosted by Nat Chan (陳百祥) and Eric Tsang (曾志偉).
Liza spoke of how just after the joyful events of the Olympic torch relay, she was overwhelmed by the sadness of the disaster. Representing the Cantonese Operatics union, the Chinese Artists Association of Hong Kong (八和會館), she said that although the organisation's own finances were not in the best way, they will still be making a donation of HK$100,000 to show their support. The Y.C. Ho Charity Fund also donated HK$200,000 and Liza's partner Law Ka Ying (羅家英) made a personal donation of HK$10,000.
Aaron was sympathetic of the victims' plight but urged them to be thankful for escaping with their lives and be strong to escape the difficult situations through the support of people around them. Richie spoke of how he would like to sponsor some of the children orphaned by the quake, so he will be working hard to achieve this aim.
Hins Cheung (張敬軒) worked hard to raise a total of HK$140,000 from his friends and family. As he can speak the Sichuan dialect, he offered his assistance as an interpreter to Alan for the planned visit to the region.
Vivian Lai (黎瑞恩) also showed her support by returning to the stage to sing at the show. The popular nineties singer retired from showbiz following her marriage and has rarely performed in public since.
The show finished at 11:30 pm and raised a total of HK$180 million from cheques and telephone pledges received on the show.
